Swimming in Color: Unleashing the Creative Mind

Creative people are gifted. Whether an artist, writer, or musician, those who can create something marvelous out of the mundane deserve our praises. Kudos to the colorful creatives that walk this Earth. Without you, life would be drab.

Tapping into the wellspring of creativity doesn’t always come easy. Some days we are in the flow, producing great works of art. Other days our creative process is blocked and we become bored and unimaginative. Not feeling artistic or inspired? The following meditation will help you get your creative juices flowing whenever you and the world around you seem dull and colorless.

Begin in a comfortable position free from distractions. Clear your space from anything that might interfere with your concentration and focus. Take several deep breaths to empty your mind and relax your body.

In your mind’s eye, imagine a bright and vivid rainbow. Bring your attention to each color as they arc in perfect unison.

Now, craft a nature-based imagery for each color. For example, when you visualize the color blue, let your mind swim through it as if you’re plunging into a vast ocean.

For the color green, imagine you are walking through a tropical rain forest.

Do the same for each color. Take your time and be creative with this process.

Perhaps would like to repeat the exercise, bringing some variety to your imageries. If you are not feeling inspired, come back to your breath and try again.

After immersing in each individual color of the rainbow, broaden your vision and see the rainbow in its entirety. Let this image imprint in your mind for as long as you can.

When you are ready to complete this meditation, envision the sky clearing and the colors of the rainbow fading. It is not going away; it is simply becoming part of you. As your rainbow disappears from your mind’s eye imagine the colors soaking into your spirit. Become one with the color red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet and the creative energy from the corresponding nature-based images you imagined. You may feel as if your soul has been in the ocean, walked through a rainforest, and so on. Absorb all the inspiration that this colorful meditation brings to you.

Whenever you are feeling drab, tap into the wellspring of color and imagination. Your spirit is your palate and the world is your canvas. Write, paint, sing, dance. Create beauty for all to enjoy.
