Do You Go With The Flow?

We have all heard the phrase, “Go with the flow.” While this is intended to give us permission to let life happen and accept the things we cannot change, the quote carries a bit of controversy. Some believe going with the flow is a cop out that wastes vital energy. Motivational author, Sean Covey, son of Steven Covey, author of the book, 7 Habits of Successful People, believes going with the flow goes against the grain of human potential. He said, “If you decide to just go with the flow, you'll end up where the flow goes, which is usually downhill, often leading to a big pile of sludge and a life of unhappiness. You'll end up doing what everyone else is doing.”

Whatever you believe to be true, embodying the flowing qualities of water has its advantages. The following meditation is designed to awaken you to the empowering nature of going with the flow. Practice and experience droplets of wisdom soaking your spirit with inner peace and inspiration.

Begin in a comfortable position free from distractions. Take several deep breaths to clear your mind and relax your body. Now, imagine a river. See this image clearly in your mind’s eye. Take a moment to equate your river with the forces in your life. Your river doesn’t represent specific events in your life, it is only the energy around the events.

Next, place a boat in the river. This boat represents your mind. Be a witness, and watch your boat travel down stream. Perhaps your mind is bouncing through rapids, getting caught in an eddy, or being turned upside-down by the force of the stream. Have no fear. While the water may carry your boat to places you’d rather not be, you have all the power you need to steer your mind in the direction you wish to go, using the flow to your advantage.

Understand that while going with the flow may seem like you are giving up your authority to the forces at hand, this is not necessarily the case. You must learn to harness life’s energy for forward momentum. Where the current takes you is entirely up to you. Trust yourself, and utilize the energetic life-force to travel toward your desired destiny.

May this water meditation teach you to flow with ease, erode away that which no longer serves you, and carry your awareness to new depths within yourself.
